When officers arrived at the Jervis Road home in Yonkers late Monday night, two large dogs came out, and the pit bull attacked one of the officers, biting him on his ankle and latching on to him, Politiopulos said.
The officer was attacked by the pit bull around 9:20 p.m. after responding to a call from a 10-year-old boy who said he was being abused, said Yonkers Police Det. Sgt. Dean Politiopulos.
"The officer had to fire a shot to protect himself during the attack," he said.
After firing the shot, the dog ran off and has not been found despite a large search of Tibbets Park which is nearby the home.
After the shooting and dog attack, the child was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Politiopulos also said Child Protective Services were notified of the child's living conditions, which included a home in disarray and covered in areas with dog feces.
The officer was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released, he said.
